I was inspired to create this album by an exhibition of paintings by Claude Monet. I decided to take a new approach to composing to depict a musical impressionism:
Lots of piano sounds, no drums, airy arrangements, many seventh chords and real ambient mood.

No one had ever painted the true color of sun and shadow, and hardly anyone had thought it useful to assume that the density of air is not always constant. That one could, for example, paint a picture of a landscape seen through a dense fog.
But these discoveries were basically only partial aspects of a larger discovery. What the Impressionists did, without knowing it, was to recognize the phenomenon of transience. The artist who carries his canvas outdoors and tries to capture every nuance of what his eye sees is in a very different mood than the artist who builds his painting in his studio from a series of preparatory sketches or studies.
Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, but visible brushstrokes; open composition; an emphasis on the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often emphasizing the effects of the passage of time); ordinary subjects; unusual viewpoints; and the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience. Impressionism originated with a group of Parisian artists who became known through independent exhibitions in the 1870s and 1880s.
